"Lick Lick, Itch Itch- Oh, What A Relief Raw Is"

Posted by anita melfo on Tuesday, July 2, 2013, In : Diet
Itchiness, flakiness, goopiness, bald spots, hot spots, diarrhea, ear infections --- DREADED allergies! Canine allergies are one of the top health issues plaguing the dog world. It's unfortunate because it is such unnecessary agony for our dogs.  I mean it is truly one of those things that takes on the 'snowball' effect. First it might be a random ear infection or itchy skin. Soon the ear infection becomes recurring and the itchy skin turns into an ugly hotspot.

Grain is one of the top...

"Friends With Benefits"

Posted by anita melfo on Sunday, June 16, 2013, In : Diet
Hah!--Now that I have your attention, of course I'm referring man's best "friend" and the "benefits" of a natural raw diet, not only for our family pets but the working dog world! There are many correlations between a raw (biologically appropriate) diet and the performance, health and longevity of the working dog. Feeding raw benefits impact their drives(prey, civil, ball, hunt, retrieve, scenting, play); weight management; strength, health and longevity.

Drives ~ A healthy diet of raw meaty bo...

"Skinny On Your Pooch's Ponch"

Posted by anita melfo on Thursday, June 13, 2013, In : Diet
Canine obesity. It's sad to say that out of 77.5 million dogs in the United States 35 million are overweight, while almost 7 million are clinically obese. There really, truly, is no excuse for these statistics to be so astronomical. We, as owners, are purchasing their food and feeding them.

Processed fats and carbohydrates in commercial dog food can cause the deterioration of the digestive systems of our dogs. These elements get caught up in the villi, tiny finger-like projections that line t...

"You Are What You Eat"

Posted by anita novosel on Thursday, June 13, 2013, In : Diet
Think about it~ So, maybe we don't turn into a chicken after we have chicken for dinner, just like we don't turn into a cupcake after we eat one, BUT-- if you take a minute to consider what chicken consists of compared to that cupcake, you will see where I'm coming from.

When we eat what is biologically appropriate for our systems our systems thrive. When we eat things we aren't naturally meant to ingest our bodies fail us. Same goes for our dogs, even tho we don't share in the same "appropri...

"Seriously, The Smell Alone Is Enough To Gag A Maggot!"

Posted by anita novosel on Monday, June 10, 2013, In : Diet
Commercial dog food....Seriously, the smell alone is enough to gag a maggot! It's also really nasty that the poor animals fed these pellets start to take on that stench. Far more importantly, tho, are all of the other factors contributing to the deterioration of our dogs' health. Disgustingly enough, these factors are the same ones causing the nasty smell and ill effects. Are you ready for this???

Rendering plant. This is the manufacturing plant. Thousands of feet and heads; whole dead carcass...

"But I Have A Small Dog"

Posted by anita novosel on Sunday, June 9, 2013, In : Diet
If I had a nickel for every time I heard this I'd be a millionaire!  A dog is a dog. They have the same dental set up and same digestive systems as big dogs- just smaller. Now, that being said, I would personally feed different sized bones for a small dog compared to a large dog simply for practical reasons. For example, my German Shepherds eat all forms of bones ranging from chicken necks to turkey backs and everything in between. If you have a small dog I'd stick with the smaller bones for ...

"Poop.That Sh** Don't Stink"

Posted by anita novosel on Saturday, June 8, 2013, In : Diet
Twenty years ago I would not have believed I'd be blogging about poop on a Friday night! Oh well, it's a legitimate concern and I might as well get it over with. Let's face it, one of the ONLY drawbacks to being a dog owner is poop patrol. The specifics would be frequency, quantity/consistency, and stench. Yuuuuck. There is good news, tho, for those of you contemplating switching to a raw diet.

Frequency- Plain and simple. A raw fed dog is getting more nutrients they require so they have FAR ...

"I Have Never Seen Such A Beautiful Dog!"

Posted by anita novosel on Friday, June 7, 2013, In : Diet
While there are countless benefits of feeding our dogs a raw diet, some of the most noticeable are those that 'meet the eye(or nose)'. So many people approach me when I am out with my dogs simply to say,"I have never seen such a beautiful dog!". Of course, we are all a bit biased when it comes to our dogs but the folks who approach me are genuinely shocked at the appearance of my dogs. Much to their surprise I inform them they require very little maintenance compared to others' dogs. The eye ...
